What is the CFF Credential?
By: Eli C. Neal
You may have seen CFF in our email signatures or on our website, and wondered, what does that mean—and why should I care? Let me explain why this credential is more than just a few extra letters after our names—and how it directly benefits you.
What is the CFF Credential?
The CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics) credential is a designation issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). It’s granted exclusively to CPAs who have demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in forensic accounting.
Forensic accounting means we don’t just look at numbers—we interpret them in the context of fraud, litigation, disputes, investigations, or financial irregularities. It’s accounting through a legal and investigative lens.
Why the CFF Credential is Different
Unlike general accounting certifications, the CFF focuses on forensic methodology, legal standards, and investigative techniques. To earn it, we had to:
Be a licensed CPA and an AICPA member
Complete at least 1,000 hours of forensic accounting work
Complete 75+ hours of specialized education
Pass a rigorous exam
In short, it’s a credential that shows we have the experience and judgment to help you in sensitive and high-stakes financial matters.
How Does This Help You?
Whether you’re a business owner, a legal professional, or someone going through a personal financial matter, the CFF credential signals that you’re working with someone who has specialized training in complex financial situations. Here's what that means for you:
1. Litigation Support
If you’re involved in a legal dispute—whether it’s a contract issue, shareholder disagreement, or divorce—we can help uncover, analyze, and present financial evidence that holds up in court.
2. Business Valuation & Damages
We assist in calculating economic damages or valuing a business, whether for litigation, succession planning, or financial reporting. With the CFF, we bring both technical expertise and legal sensitivity to the process.
3. Expert Testimony
As CFFs, we are qualified to serve as expert witnesses and are able to clearly communicate complex financial findings to judges, juries, and attorneys.
When You Might Need a Forensic Accountant
Here are a few real-world situations where clients have relied on our CFF training:
A business partner suspected misappropriation of funds and needed evidence for legal action
A client going through a divorce needed help identifying separate property
A law firm required expert financial analysis in a commercial litigation case
In all these cases, the CFF credential gives clients added confidence that they were getting not just numbers, but also truth, clarity, and strategic guidance.
In Closing
Having the CFF credential isn’t just a professional achievement for us, it’s a commitment to serving clients like you with deeper insight and higher standards. When finances are tangled in legal issues, disputes, or suspicions, you deserve a CPA who brings more than just spreadsheets; you deserve an expert who can stand behind their findings.
